Kitchen design has changed dramatically within the last 50 years. From indoor refrigerators to dishwashers and microwaves, modern kitchen design is all about convenience, fluidity, and simplicity. The design and appliances compliment our times perfectly – no more clunky iceboxes and wood burning stoves.

While modern kitchen design isn’t quite how it was perceived in “The Jetsons,” the materials are modern – made of linoleum, plastics, steel and chrome, along with artistic touches of granite, marble, and wood. A simplistic elegance haunts the kitchens, with many of the major appliances hidden in small out of the way cabinets, allowing the room to remain open in breezy.

Refrigerators are the most visible appliances encompassed in modern kitchen design. Some blend beautifully into the background using faces of wood, and others stand out boldly made of steel. Modern kitchen design brings you the ability to have your personal taste in color match the rest of your kitchen, without spending more money or looking in the far corners of the Earth. In some modern refrigerators, you’ll find ice machines and small computers to help you plan your meals. Even better, these computers can remind you to thaw your meat overnight and help balance the nutrition of your diet.

Dishwashers, which until modern kitchen design were the household members, are now commonplace, usually taking residence next to the kitchen sink. Dishwashers allow for dishes to be washed in near-boiling water, allowing for the dishes to be perfectly sanitized and beautifully dried – each time. To accompany the dishwasher, a garbage disposal is found under the sink to allow for the easy disposal of foodstuffs and other kitchen by-products.

Oven and stovetops are just as discreet, and in many kitchens you’ll find the oven and stovetop hidden in the counter area. With flat-surfaced burners, it’s become easy to hide the stovetop, and with the self-cleaning oven it’s easy to forget its there when not in use!

On the granite and marble countertops, you’ll find microwaves, which can cook food as fast as lightning! The invention of these devices over 30 years ago revolutionized cooking, and in the interim has created an entire industry relating to the producing of foods therein. In modern kitchen design, you’ll find microwaves where you can scan just the barcode of the item to be cooked, and the microwave will do the rest.

Cabinets are plentiful in modern kitchen design, and can be made of a plethora of material. You can find cabinets made of oak, pine, plastic, fiberglass, and many more materials. The structure and architecture of the kitchen allow for ample cabinet space, bringing cabinets above the head and rotating lower cabinets that can house much more items than in previous designs.

Flooring, while often overlooked, is also made of newer materials. While you can still find many kitchens floored in wood, many floors are also covered in linoleum and carpets, and others are elaborately adorned in tile and marble.

As you can see, the decoration and design of the kitchen has changed dramatically in the past 100 years. Modern kitchen design allows for a great number of appliances and materials to be used, thus making it customizable for anyone!

I am a pottery fanatic. I find pottery to be quite a useful tool in cooking, storing, and hiding things. If I had my choice about it, my kitchen cabinets would be overflowing with pottery in all shapes, sizes, and colors. It only makes sense that I find Danish pottery to be of such interest to me. Denmark is prime real estate for clay production and they have had centuries to perfect their craft and they have done just that.

The truth of the matter is that Danish pottery has a long history in Denmark. Like most Danish art, their pottery consists of the clean lines and the simplistic features that their art is so famous for. Art plays a vital role in Denmark, not only culturally but for business as well. We are, after all, talking about the country that graced the world with the Lego. Creativity is an important aspect of the culture and the people of this country.

One of the most famish artist in the line of Danish pottery is probably Bjorn Wiinblad. He is known worldwide and has enjoyed a career that has spanned more than 60 years. His talents aren’t limited to pottery and ceramics however; his art has been displayed on book covers, glass, and a myriad of other creative mediums. His artistic creativity in addition to his versatility combined makes him rather impossible to classify. He is much like a jack-of-all-trades within the artistic community and yet remains wildly popular.

Danish pottery, like Bjorn Wiinblad has many facets. Much of the pottery of Denmark matches the modernistic flare of the furniture that is created here as well. The furniture, the art, they all form a symbiotic relationship within the home and most artists of the area are designing their wares for the local buying public. Not that they don’t welcome tourists, but most tourists offer a one-time purchase. The local public is the bread and butter for these people and they are well aware of it. It only makes sense that their designs would reflect the local culture and the idea that less is indeed sometimes more.

If you haven’t ever taken a long hard look at Danish pottery, perhaps you should. I think you will find it at the very least an attractive addition to your home décor even if you are not a collector of pottery. For those of us who lover pottery there are tiny shops throughout Denmark where we could get lost for hours if not days. One of the biggest complaints that I’ve heard is that the quality of the pottery is so good that it is very difficult indeed to tell the difference between studio pieces and finished pieces. A grand compliment indeed to the local artisans.

I don’t know how you feel about pottery. For me I find it a worthy investment because it’s art that is useful to me. I use my pottery as mixing bowls, I put them in the microwave, dishwasher, oven, I even serve food from my pottery in addition to using it for decoration. Whether you are a true lover of pottery or not, I would hope that you could at the very least appreciate the skill, the time, the labor, and the dedication to craft that is very evident in most Danish pottery.

In a kitchen or bathroom, adding rustic door hardware is a great way to add a rustic touch without going to a great amount of expense or hassle. Rustic door knobs and drawer pulls can be found at almost any hardware stores in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and styles. There are almost as many drawer pulls and door handles on the market as one person could possibly imagine, if not a few more than most people can imagine.

The right rustic door hardware can change the look of your entire network of cabinetry. It’s amazing the difference something as simple as a door knob or drawer pull can make in the look of a room. With a rustic style of décor you will want to choose hardware that is sturdy and low maintenance. I say low maintenance because who wants to spend all their time polishing door knobs, drawer pulls, and faucets. If you select finishes that don’t require polishing you have a better chance first of all of achieving the rustic look you are hoping for and secondly, do not require daily polishing in order to maintain their good looks. Not that there is anything wrong with shiny door knobs and drawer pulls, they just aren’t very rustic.

You might think it’s such a small thing, and really it is. But it is the small touches such as rustic door hardware that can make all the difference in the world when decorating. The little things are the subtle reminders that bring warmth and confirm that great care was taken in selecting the perfect touches for a room. They are also reminders to the guests in your home that no small detail was left unnoticed by you the home owner. There is very little that I find sadder in a home than neglected hardware. It provides a sense that the cabinetry (a very expensive piece of your home I might add) is an afterthought and takes away from the warmth that you are going for in a rustic styled room.

You may find that my insistence on rustic door hardware seems a little strange, however, one of the first things someone sees when knocking on your door or entering your home is the door hardware. It makes a first impression that can’t be unmade. If you are going for a rustic feel within your home you don’t want to set the stage for modern décor at the front door. You also don’t want your guests to get mixed signals if you can avoid them. We all want our homes to be safe and to buy the best hardware available in order to make that happen, but by shopping around and asking questions, it is often quite easy to find the perfect hardware that will actually suit your decorating needs at the same time.

With any home, or any decorating style, it is always the small touches that make the greatest impact. The little things that others will notice (trust me, there is always someone that notices) that make such a large impression on not only your home, but your personal style and taste as well. The attention to detail that you provide in things such as rustic door hardware says a lot of good things about you as a person.

In the style of art deco, floor lamps are a very popular item. They can be used to compliment any room, from the kitchen to the family room, and are created in such numerous styles that anyone can find the perfect place for them –whether the rest of the building is decorated in the art deco style or not. You’ve probably spotted a few art deco floor lamps in your time, without even realizing it.

The beautiful bases of the art deco floor lamp can be made out of almost any material, from cast iron to steel, wood to plastic, and every other variety of hard material you can think of. Art deco lamp designers have made every possible effort to use modern innovative designs and materials on their work, making art deco lamp bases appear very contemporary and ‘hip’.

The art deco floor lamp usually has a stem that is beautiful as well as functional. Depending on the designer, it can be very ornamental or very angular. Some stems will have very fluid, sleek design with ornamentation engraved on the stem. Other designers will use outward ornamentation to make the form look like another object, such as a tree. You should be able to find both couture and mass produced styles to achieve the look you need.

The bulb area of the art deco floor lamp is usually a sight to behold. In some instances this area will be sleek and smooth to accent the rest of the piece; and in other instances, this area can be used for extra angular ornamentation, and can be one of the most beautiful parts of the lamp. You can find simple and extravagant ornamentation, depending on the designer, and with couture pieces you will be able to get any design you want. With mass produced pieces, however, you will have to do some searching – but you’ll be able to find what fits your desire.

The shade on modern art deco floor lamps can vary greatly. From rice paper to stained glass, there is a wide spread of decoration you can use for the most visible part of your floor lamp. Since it reflects light, you can use this part of the lamp to change the shade and tone of a room, with very little effort (on the consumer end). Once again, a couture piece will give you what you want the first time, but you may have to do a lot of hunting when you’re looking through pieces that have been in mass production.

As you can see, lighting is an essential part of your home décor, but with art deco floor lamps you’ll be able to find the perfect accent for you home. Between the varieties and styles, and customization options, art deco floor lamps will bring the lighting in your home to a whole new level!

Updating the kitchen is a goal for many homeowners, but once new appliances are chosen, the budget may not stretch to new cupboards. An unfinished kitchen cabinet can save the project and the budget as well as permitting a truly individual look.

Kitchen cabinets can be built-in or freestanding, and unfinished kitchen cabinets can be purchased of either type. In both cases, the construction is likely to be better than that of prefinished cabinets in the same price range. Unfinished cupboards are constructed from real wood, not particle board (a product made of bonded wood chips), so they are sturdier and last longer. This is especially important in the kitchen, where hard use is the norm. Many prefinished cupboards are actually made of particle board covered by a wood veneer. Unfinished kitchen cabinets are typically made from high-quality kiln-dried wood that has been carefully handled and is free of knots, cracks, and other weaknesses.

If you want the look of natural wood in your kitchen, the unfinished kitchen cabinet can be simply stained and sealed. Most unfinished pieces need additional fine sanding before finishing. This eliminates any surface fuzz or roughness that will show when the stain is applied, as well as removing any oils that may have clung when the furniture was touched by human hands. Use very fine sandpaper, and always sand in the direction of the grain. Then rub the surface with a tack rag to remove any dust. Stains can be water-based or oil-based, liquid or gel, designed to be the first step in a multi-step procedure or incorporated into a one-step finishing project. Each manufacturer issues directions and safety warnings with its products. Be sure to follow all safety precautions and to follow directions carefully. A strong, water-resistant topcoat is desirable in the kitchen, and polyurethane is a popular choice for unfinished kitchen cabinets.

You can paint your unfinished kitchen cabinet to enhance your décor. Many paint manufacturers make especially durable enamels for use in high-traffic areas like the kitchen, and choosing such a finish will make kitchen cleaning much easier. You can use a wide variety of decorative paint techniques on unfinished kitchen cabinets, but be sure to seal the project with a durable topcoat.

Unusual effects can be achieved by enhancing the wood grain of an unfinished kitchen cabinet with pickling or bleaching. These surface effects can create an effective background for stenciled or decoupage images.

For a more dramatic treatment, think of the cupboard doors as a single surface. Paint a mural or a trompe l’oeil window, and give the entire room a distinct atmosphere

Express your individuality, stay within your budget, and complete your kitchen renovation with an unfinished kitchen cabinet.

The kitchen is the heart of any home and a rustic kitchen décor says home and hearth like no other. There are so many creative ways you can make a kitchen seem rustic without even going to a great amount of expense. Rustic, when referring to a kitchen décor spells out natural or referring to nature. There are all kinds of natural ‘touches’ you can add to your kitchen to accomplish this overall appearance and ‘feel’. The correct furniture can do so much to add to the rustic atmosphere of a kitchen, perhaps more so than any other decorative touches that you can add.

Posted by admin Comments (0)

By carefully selecting your furniture to match the overall tone you want your kitchen to take, you can achieve the rustic kitchen of your dreams with little to no effort. The extra little touches you add can seal the deal so to speak, providing you with a warm and inviting kitchen that will quite literally be the focal point of your home. If you wish to go with the rustic kitchen furniture (such as a table, sideboard, hutch, and/or cupboard) and add a few small touches you can achieve your desired level of warmth without going overboard. Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with overboard if you wish to immerse yourself in the rustic nature of your kitchen.

You can even add things such as an old farmhouse sink, rustic knobs and drawer pulls, and hardwood or stone floors to complete the look. Some of these touches may be more expensive than others, but the overall effect is quite stunning. Simple things such as these can have a huge impact on the overall feel of your kitchen. If a rustic kitchen is what you want, you want to be sure that the items you display in your kitchen accentuate that tone rather than detract from it. Carefully choose which items you will want to display in order to achieve the maximum decorating effect.

In addition to the above things, small items can have a significant impact in creating a rustic kitchen décor for you and your family. If you are hoping to make your kitchen the center of your home and want it to be a centralized zone for your family, you will want to create a warm and inviting room. One of the ways you can do this is by bringing small touches of nature inside. Use hardwood or stone flooring in your kitchen. Use a lot of natural materials for decorating, cooking, and serving food. Pottery and wooden dishes assist in maintaining a natural look and flow to your kitchen.

The kitchen is the one room that memories are quite often created in. Whether those memories are of you baking with your children or your children baking with you, late night popcorn making or teenaged tears shared over cartons of ice cream, your kitchen will forever be a part of the fabric of your life and your children’s lives. If you have a rustic kitchen, you will find that those memories have a warmth to them that can be so lacking in many kitchens.
