Wrought iron beds were a common site in nineteenth and early twentieth century America. This popular style featured black metal frames, headboards and accents made from relatively thin iron bars bent into a variety of attractive and ornate patterns. Although some wrought iron beds were painted white, the traditional look of these frames involves a black matte finish.

As time progressed, the once-popular wrought iron bed frames fell out of favor. This was due, in part to a change in tastes on the part of consumers. The highly decorative look that once prevailed in home decoration was slowly replaced by a less detailed and more colorful sense of style.

Additionally, wrought iron beds were not able to maintain a competitive price compared to mass-produced wooden frames. Wood became cheaper, more uniform, sturdier and more readily available and mass production of furniture became increasingly common. Wrought iron beds were generally handmade by artisans and the time-consuming process of making a beautiful wrought iron frame made them far more expensive than a variety of fairly attractive alternatives.

Today, some are looking at wrought iron beds again. This reflects a willingness among consumers to consider historical options in decorating. For decades, homeowners focused on adopting the newest styles and looks. As modern design radicalized, however, many began to look back through history for aesthetically pleasing options. This willingness to backtrack in style has led many to recognize the timeless beauty of wrought iron beds. Wrought iron is making a comeback in many settings, and the bedroom is chief among them. Antique styled dressers with wrought iron hardware and beds made from wrought iron are both climbing in popularity.

Though some buyers’ tastes are turning back toward the nineteenth century look, price tags for a good wrought iron bed remain relatively high. In fact, the price differential between standard wooden beds and even cheaper no-frills metal frames is even more pronounced today than it was decades ago. As such, those who want to capture the antique look of wrought iron must be prepared to pay for the privilege.

Most makers of wrought iron beds are smaller operations focusing on custom construction. They build the bed frames in a manner remarkably similar to the artisans of the past and show a painstaking attention to detail and quality. The beds are ornate, beautiful and extremely well made. In fact, their durability considerably outdistances that of most mass-produced alternatives. One may pay more, but they can get more in return.

If you are looking for a way to make a bold and beautiful statement in your bedroom, you may want to consider wrought iron. This old-fashioned element of design can today serve to reinvigorate a room. There are many features of antique furnishings that still have a striking visual impact today. A perfect example of this are hand-made wrought iron beds.

Danish furniture has become synonymous with contemporary furniture over the last several decades. Some of the most elegant modern furniture on the market today is of Danish design. Not only do people associate the classic modern lines and look of this furniture with Danish craftsmanship but the general quality of this furniture makes it one of the most popular styles of furniture on the market today. And, this popularity is showing no signs whatsoever of fading.

Danish furniture requires no ornamental scrollwork or bright and bold patterns. It’s simplicity and sleek design is part of its appeal. One of the things that you will immediately notice about this furniture is its use of wood in combination with other materials. The other thing you will notice is that it is built for comfort and functionality rather than for looks.

While the furniture does have a modern and often sleek look to it, there is purpose in the modern lines that goes far beyond appearance. Most Danish furniture is designed with the human body in mind. The form of the furniture is meant to conform to the contours and shape of the human body. Not only does this furniture offer superior form and comfort, you will also find that it is very beautiful for the very simplicity of its design.

Some of the most elegant things are really quite simple. A simple, single strand of pearls is one of the most beautiful and elegant jewelry pieces a girl can own and yet there is no real adornment, no fancy settings. The simplicity of the strand is what makes it so beautiful. The same principle holds true for Danish furniture. It doesn’t have to extensive patterns, scrollwork, or complicated lines. The mere simplicity of this furniture is a significant component of its beauty. The superior comfort is vital to its appeal. The combination of the two is the reason for its unsurpassed popularity over the better part of the last century.

With furniture lines for the home office to the home theatre and everything in between, Danish furniture makers have been quite busy. The fact that they continue to remain ahead of the trends and demands of the public is almost uncanny. The makers of this phenomenal furniture also have the ability to improve upon existing concepts and make them more comfortable while retaining the overall look and appeal of the furniture they are improving all the while continuing to create new and innovative furniture as they go.

These talented craftsmen do not limit themselves to copying and improving works of others, nor do they find themselves above it. If something works with the body they are perfectly willing to adopt and adapt the new technology to increase the performance and comfort of their furniture. If it looks good but isn’t comfortable, they can adopt the look and find ways to increase the comfort. I applaud their efforts at creating furniture for the human form. The Danish furniture makers are modern miracle workers if you ask me.

The Craftsman style home has been an American classic for over a century. These houses are characterized by the use of natural materials, an emphasis on structural form, and the integration of interior and exterior spaces. Their open floor plan prefigured the ‘ranch’ houses so popular in the second half of the 20th century.

Strictly speaking, only house plans published in Gustav Stickley’s The Craftsman magazine can be called Craftsman homes. He published descriptions, drawings, and floor plans for his homes starting in 1901, and he considered everything about the home as his subject. He wrote, “The word that is best loved in the language of every nation is home, for when a man’s home is born out of his heart and developed through his labor and perfected through his sense of beauty, it is the very cornerstone of his life.” His Craftsman houses, like his furniture, were an attempt to provide that cornerstone. His magazine featured at least one house a month for years, and subscribers could request building plans for one house from the series per year, free of charge.

The Craftsman style home can be recognized by the refinement of design and the quality of construction and finish. It is usually related harmoniously to the building site and is often placed to advantage using the site. The house is built with natural materials native to the region. Sticklely’s house designs rely on exposed structural elements for decorative details. The variety of natural materials included provide textures for light to play on. Visual interest is created by recessed porches and entryways. The interiors of Stickley’s houses emphasize form and function. Space is conservatively and creatively used for living, with design elements utilizing wood and built-in spaces such as inglenooks, benches and cabinets. Light fixtures and hardware are integrated as design elements.

Stickley intended his home designs “to substitute the luxury of taste for the luxury of costliness; to teach that beauty does not imply elaboration or ornament; to employ only those forms and materials which make for simplicity, individuality and dignity of effect.” Other designers and architects, like Greene and Greene, Elbert Hubbard of Roycroft, and Frank Lloyd Wright had similar intentions, and soon their houses too were referred to as Craftsman style homes. Stickley designed over 241 houses in the course of his career, and his decorative details were expensive to execute. Although his houses were idealistically conceived for the masses, they were built primarily by the middle class.

The rich could commission homes by Greene and Greene or Wright. The working class could order not only plans but entire kits from Sears and Roebuck’s mail-order catalog. The house would be delivered with pre-cut lumber, nails, doors, etc., as well as a sheet of instructions. Every necessary building component was included, and a local craftsman could easy assemble the house. The middle class used Stickley’s plans to create their Craftsman style home.

Modern rugs are sleek, stark and spacious with angular lines and shapes. The popularity of this style of design is escalating, and with it is the demand for modern home décor accessories. Modern rugs can add color, texture, interest, and space definition to your décor. In the past, it could be difficult to find a modern rug to fit a consumer’s precise space and contextual requirements; today, however, there is a growing number of rug companies that manufacture modern rugs and more stores, in turn, are stocking these brilliant and popular designs.

Posted by admin Comments (0)

There is a huge market for modern rugs, and because of this buyers aren’t restricted to old faded colors with abstract patters. Today you can find rugs with designs ranging from solid colors to modern stripes, circles, animal prints, and more. Additionally, you can find many rugs that are replicated from famous artwork, such as a famous Andy Warhol or Leonardo da Vinci depiction.

For many consumers, the form of ‘rug art’ is considered far too expensive and beyond the budget of the average person. If they only knew! One does not have to spend a life’s fortune to own a high quality modern rug. Actually, modern rugs are becoming the choice for a number of designers, and you can visit the Museum of Modern Art to find a number of rugs that replicate vintage and modern paintings. Many abstract artists are featured on modern rugs, with artists such as Kadinski, Picasso, and Braque.

Even without an impressive painting canvassing the rugs, the style can be simple and refined using color scheme for effect rather than coordination. The usage of solid colored rugs with interesting textures and patters to compliment other furniture pieces and accessories is becoming more popular every day. The solid palette modern rugs depict clean lines and compliment high-end contemporary or casual settings, and are typically hand made in India from Indian and New Zealand wools.

In addition, there is another form of rug called the metro modern rug collection which has a minimalist form and has exquisitely refined details. These rugs are accented by their neutral colors, tone-on-tone designs, and underlying simplicity of line, shape, and form. This range of emotions that the rugs depict makes them a hit for consumers and designers alike.

Today’s modern rugs are available in three different yarns: wools, nylons, and polypropylene. Wool is the most expensive of the three, and polypropylene is the least expensive. Experts recommend that it is best not to shampoo your rug right away – just vacuum it regularly, depending on the traffic it’s exposed to.

Because of the high quality most modern rugs can last up to 20 years, needing only occasional cleaning. If you remember to keep in mind the type of fabric you need for your modern rugs, you’ll have a long-lasting welcome addition to the décor of your home.

Even though the practice hasn’t changed much in several hundred years, modern sculpture is still a very popular form of art. It is a form of artistic expression where hard or plastic materials are worked, by carving, molding, or welding, into three dimensional art objects. The designs may be embodied in existing objects, reliefs on surfaces, or in environments ranging from tableaux to context that envelop the spectator. Sculpture can be made of clay, wax, stone, fabric, wood, plaster, rubber, and other seemingly ‘random’ materials and objects. These materials can be carved, molded, modeled, cast, wrought, welded, sewn, assembled, or otherwise manipulated into the sculpture.

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Modern sculpture is not a tem that applies to a fixed or permanent category of objects or activities. The term and practice of modern sculpture grows and changes and continually extends the range of its activities and evolves into new kinds of objects and designs. The definition has changed much more dramatically in the second half of the Twentieth Century than it had in much of the period before, thus turning ‘modern sculpture’ into a fluid state of creation that seemingly no one can predict it’s next inception.

Before ‘modern,’ sculpture was considered to be a solid form of art, or mass that represented something. While the voids and hollows have always had their space in the pieces, modern sculpture has shifted the focus to the spatial aspects of the works of art. Also, before the age of ‘modern,’ sculpture was considered a representational art. While it had long been accepted that three-dimensional objects such as furniture, pots, and buildings were expressive and beautiful, it was not until the Twentieth Century that nonfunctional, nonrepresentational, three-dimensional works of art began production.

Modern sculpture has not been confided to the two traditional forming processes of carving and modeling, nor to such traditional materials such as stone, metal, wood, ivory, bone, and clay. Sculptures can use any form of material and manufacture that serve their purpose, therefore the art of sculpture can not be identified with these techniques.

Even though there has been a great many changes in the mechanics of creating sculptures, the essential thing that remains the same is the fact that is the branch of the visual arts that expresses in three dimensions. Sculpture can either be in ‘round’ (a separate, detached object, with independent space) or ‘relief’ (sculpture which is an integral part or attached to something) forms. Sculpture does not conjure up the illusion of space by optical means – it has a reality, a physical presence that is denied to all other art forms. The forms of sculpture are tangible as well as visible, therefore it appeals greatly to both the touch and vision.

Because three dimensional forms are perceived as having a ‘character’ as well as spatial properties, the use of sculpture has evolved from representational art to an art that, while it takes up actual space, is abstract in thought and form. Modern sculpture manipulates our perceptions of art, bringing beauty, simplicity, and abstraction to prominent art form everyone appreciates.

Mission or Craftsman style furniture is the American version of Arts and Crafts furniture. It has a distinctive organic appeal that makes it popular today, a hundred years after its introduction.

Posted by admin Comments (0)

The Arts and Crafts movement began in England as a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and the excesses of the Victorian era. It emphasized fine craftsmanship, a design rooted in nature, and solid construction. William Morris decreed that furniture “should be made of timber rather than walking sticks.”

The furniture produced in America, influenced by Shaker design, was more austere than English furniture. American designers like Gustav Stickley and Elbert Hubbard were happy to employ machines in furniture-making, and the plain lines of their designs were very suitable for machine production. Their severe lines foreshadowed 20th-century modern style.

Architects like Frank Lloyd Wright or Greene and Greene designed furniture to complement their houses. Although their designs were somewhat more sinuous, the construction methods were much the same as Stickley’s. Their furniture, too, is often referred to as Mission or Craftsman style furniture.

Strictly speaking, only furniture designed by Gustav Stickley can be called Craftsman furniture, since that was the name of his workshop. He first displayed his new furniture style at the Grand Rapids Furniture Exposition in 1900, and advertised it in Chicago newspapers in the same year. It was plain and simple, used mortise-and-tenon joinery, and was made of oak. The grain of the wood was an important element of the design, adding greatly to its beauty. The wood was quarter sawn to show off the grain, and it was fumed before finishing to further emphasize the beauty of the grain. Although Stickley did use machinery in making his furniture, all the finishing was done by hand. It was labor-intensive, time-consuming, and relatively expensive.

Stickley wrote, “In the beginning, there was no thought of creating a new style, only a recognition of the fact that we should have in our homes something better suited to our needs and more expressive of our character as a people than imitations of the traditional styles.” He wanted to make “simple, strong, comfortable furniture” that would last for generations, and he succeeded. His pieces are highly valued by collectors today.

The simple lines of Stickley’s designs were easy to imitate, even though the details of his craftsmanship were not. Furniture manufacturers in Grand Rapids translated his designs into affordable items and successfully marketed them to the masses. Companies like the Grand Rapids Chair Company, Limbert Comapny, and the Michigan Chair Company produced aesthetically pleasing Mission furniture, and other companies made cheap knock-offs. Retailers like Sears & Roebuck marketed Craftsman style furniture nation-wide.

Today, the clean lines of Mission furniture are again popular. L. & J.G. Stickley Co. still owns the rights to Gustav Stickley’s designs, and his beautiful Craftsman style furniture is still being produced.

Wrought iron patio furniture remains a popular purchase for many homeowners looking to improve the look and utility of their outdoor area. Many appreciate the good looks and historical feel of wrought iron, but wonder whether or not it is truly a good choice of outdoor furniture. Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of using wrought iron patio furniture.

Posted by admin Comments (0)

The advantages of wrought iron…

Wrought iron patio furniture has many great traits. Two of the most significant are appearance and overall durability. The look of wrought iron is what sells most people on the patio furniture. The pieces are usually painted in a flat black and feature ornate patterning and a classy antique look. That look is not an accident, as most of the patio furniture produced in wrought iron today is at least loosely based on patters popular in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

People describe the look of wrought iron in many different ways. It has been referred to as “stately,” “old-fashioned,” “classy,” and “decorative.” No matter what exact terms one uses to describe the metals and furnishing constructed from it, wrought iron is certainly attractive to many buyers. It has a unique look people love.

Wrought iron patio furniture is also relatively durable. Although malleable by the standards of other irons and steels, it is certainly strong enough to stand up to years of use in a patio or outdoor situation. As we will discuss later, wrought iron patio furniture does have a tendency to oxidize, but this problem is minimized by modern treatments and the overall durability of iron is still tough to beat.

There, are however, reasons to think twice before making a wrought iron outdoor furniture purchase.

The disadvantages of wrought iron…

Wrought iron patio furniture can be expensive. When compared to plastic and resin alternatives, it is extremely expensive. When compared with other more upscale options, such as redwood, wrought iron still tends to cost more, although the differential may be slightly less pronounced.

Cost is a factor in virtually any purchase, and the selection of patio furniture is no exception. Cost can be a prohibitive factor for many homeowners who might otherwise be interested in wrought iron patio furniture.

These furnishings also have a tendency to rust. In the early days of wrought iron, in fact, the metal was treated with a special wax sealant for that very reason. Today, no one relies on wax to treat the metal, but a variety of paints and other coatings have been designed to stave off rust. Oxidation is still a problem, to some extent, however, and buyers should consider the humidity of their area and the likelihood of rust setting in on their patio furnishings.

There are some very good reasons to by wrought iron, but there are also a few disadvantages to buying patio furniture made of the material. Some may love it, others may pass. Regardless, it is not a surprise to encounter wrought iron patio furniture in many backyards.

Maple has been a favorite wood of American furniture makers since early Colonial days, prized for both its beauty and durability. Unfinished maple furniture is a popular choice today as well.

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Maple is a light-colored hardwood, usually with a very even grain texture. Some maple has a figured grain that is highly prized for its decorative effect. Bird’s-eye maple shows many small circular or elliptical shapes, and burl maple displays clusters of round curls. Bird’s-eye and burl maple were often used for elaborate inlays. Tiger maple, sometimes called curly maple, shows a distinctive and beautiful wave pattern. When tiger maple is sawn across that grain, an iridescent striping is revealed in the face of the plank. Tiger maple is very rare and is used to great effect by museum-quality furniture makers.

Maple ranges from cream to a light reddish-brown in color. It is an extremely tough wood that has excellent resistance to abrasion and indentation, making it a good choice for cutting boards and countertops. Hard maple is the traditional wood for cutting boards because it imparts no taste to food. In the early twentieth century, maple was used for airplane propellers and the heels of women’s shoes.

American maple trees are divided into two groups: hard maple, which includes sugar and black maple; and soft maple, which includes red and silver maple. Any of these varieties can be found in unfinished maple furniture. Artisans also use striped maple for decorative pieces. This small tree is also called moosewood or moose maple because moose are so fond of eating it! Artisans also like to incorporate sugar maple into their work for the beautiful decorative effects created by the marks left from years of tapping the trees for maple syrup.

Most unfinished maple furniture needs additional fine sanding before finishing. This eliminates any surface fuzz or roughness that will show when the stain is applied, as well as removing any oils that may have clung when the furniture was touched by human hands. Use very fine sandpaper, and always sand in the direction of the grain. Then rub the surface with a tack rag to remove any dust.

Sometimes maple wood blotches when it is stained, so a pre-stain preparatory coat may be advisable. Stains can be water-based or oil-based, liquid or gel, designed to be the first step in a multi-step procedure or incorporated into a one-step finishing project. Each manufacturer issues directions and safety warnings with its products. Be sure to follow all safety precautions and to follow directions carefully when working with unfinished maple furniture.

Maple wood is strong and durable, so any piece made of it is likely to be used for a long time. The even grain is beautiful when polished to a high shine, and bird’s eye maple and burl maple are highly decorative. Unfinished maple furniture is a good choice for long-lasting beauty.

With the dawn of mankind came the dawn of art. Through the millennia, we’ve found ourselves with baroque and Grecian styles, Victorian and impressionist. Modern Style, the style of shape and lines, is a minimalist style – and it is still very popular to this day.

Posted by admin Comments (0)

The Modern Style came to be in the end of the 1800s. Being highly influenced by the Bauhaus style of Germany, modern is marked by sleek lines, charismatic shapes, and fanciful textures not usually suited for artwork or furniture. Materials you wouldn’t think to be suitable for a bed, for instance, will find their way into the Modern Style and be welcome. The blend of the old and new, manufactured and organic, differentiate Modern from many of the styles we see today.

In interior design, for instance, modern furniture will be crafted from materials, such as chromium, steel, plastics, and concrete – therefore lending a subtlety of influence to the modern age.

The furniture of Modern Style is nothing short of inventive. Space constraints brought the need for furniture to be modularized, and that’s exactly what Modern did. In a time when pre-fabricated houses were destined in the future, Modern brought simplicity, elegance, and panache to design that otherwise could have been mundane and average.

Even though modern style objects can be easily mass-manufactured, when they’re assembled properly you can’t tell the difference. The reason for this is Modern is made for mass production – it’s made to be made by a manufacturer and assembled by the consumer. Therefore, Modern is a very tactile art – an art that even the consumer has a hand in creating.

Oftentimes in Modern Style objects, you’ll find they’re made of one or two pieces of material. These pieces, when fitted together properly, will be a chair. The same chair, when you look at its silhouette, will look like a wine glass. Much Modern Style objects and art work have the same duality – and serve to enlighten the imagination and senses.

After the end of World War II the Modern Style became less popular, but it still has its niche. The nineteen sixties and seventies gave way to the urban-chic penthouses of the eighties, and the rise of Modern came again with a penchant. Entire magazines cater to the Modern niche, and along with it there are a horde of collectors looking for early chairs, sofas, and other collectibles.

Modern Style is not dead; in fact, with the modern collectors it is more popular now than it has been in 20 years. With the advent of modern antiquing shows on television, a new generation is falling in love with the minimalist style and the lines, shapes, and textures that differentiate the style from the rest. From New York and Tokyo Apartments to rural abodes in southern Texas, you’ll find Modern alive and kicking in its new-found popular culture atmosphere.

In the style of art deco, floor lamps are a very popular item. They can be used to compliment any room, from the kitchen to the family room, and are created in such numerous styles that anyone can find the perfect place for them –whether the rest of the building is decorated in the art deco style or not. You’ve probably spotted a few art deco floor lamps in your time, without even realizing it.

Posted by admin Comments (0)

The beautiful bases of the art deco floor lamp can be made out of almost any material, from cast iron to steel, wood to plastic, and every other variety of hard material you can think of. Art deco lamp designers have made every possible effort to use modern innovative designs and materials on their work, making art deco lamp bases appear very contemporary and ‘hip’.

The art deco floor lamp usually has a stem that is beautiful as well as functional. Depending on the designer, it can be very ornamental or very angular. Some stems will have very fluid, sleek design with ornamentation engraved on the stem. Other designers will use outward ornamentation to make the form look like another object, such as a tree. You should be able to find both couture and mass produced styles to achieve the look you need.

The bulb area of the art deco floor lamp is usually a sight to behold. In some instances this area will be sleek and smooth to accent the rest of the piece; and in other instances, this area can be used for extra angular ornamentation, and can be one of the most beautiful parts of the lamp. You can find simple and extravagant ornamentation, depending on the designer, and with couture pieces you will be able to get any design you want. With mass produced pieces, however, you will have to do some searching – but you’ll be able to find what fits your desire.

The shade on modern art deco floor lamps can vary greatly. From rice paper to stained glass, there is a wide spread of decoration you can use for the most visible part of your floor lamp. Since it reflects light, you can use this part of the lamp to change the shade and tone of a room, with very little effort (on the consumer end). Once again, a couture piece will give you what you want the first time, but you may have to do a lot of hunting when you’re looking through pieces that have been in mass production.

As you can see, lighting is an essential part of your home décor, but with art deco floor lamps you’ll be able to find the perfect accent for you home. Between the varieties and styles, and customization options, art deco floor lamps will bring the lighting in your home to a whole new level!
